5 Tips for Kicking Your Home Clutter Habit

If there’s one place where you want to feel comfortable at all times, it would be your house. But when there are papers on your kitchen table, boxes all over your office and clothes on your bathroom and bedroom floors, it can be hard to really feel at peace in your space.

Thankfully, there is a simple remedy and that’s to do a bit of de-cluttering. If you’d like a few tips on how to get rid of the clutter that you have while also preventing more of it from collecting in the future, here are five tips that can give your house a lot more room – to relax in.

Clean up on a regular basis. A big part of the reason why clutter becomes such an issue is because things are not cleaned up on a consistent basis. Take your mail, for example. If every time that you go to your mailbox to check it, you walk inside and throw it onto the closest table (or worse, couch or chair), in a matter of a few days, that space is going to be covered in envelopes, magazines and flyers. So, when it comes to your mail, your dishes, and the clothes that you take off at the end of each day, make sure to clean them up.

Make sure that everything has its proper place. Sometimes clutter comes as the result of everything not having its proper place. For instance, if you don’t have a bookshelf in your home office, then the books that you use for research will end up on the floor or piling up on your desk. That’s why it’s a good idea to look in each of your rooms and determine if everything has a specific place to go. If it doesn’t, create one.

Get rid of what you don’t use within a year’s time. Although that can be a challenging rule to put into practice, the logic is that if you went 12 months without an item, there’s a pretty good chance that you won’t use it again. Abide by the “one in, two out” rule. Along these same lines, a rule that you can incorporate into your wardrobe is the moment you don’t have enough hangers, rather than buy some more of them, take that as a sign to get rid of some of the items in your closet.

Don’t buy what you don’t need. Out of all of the tips that have been discussed, perhaps the greatest one is don’t buy what you don’t need.
